CHAPTER 1

Welcome to Wealth Training Your Kids

The purpose of this book is to help parents instill an “abundance mentality” and wise money management in children to such an extent that by the time children go to or graduate from college, managing money wisely is second nature to them.  It is about (1) good money habits, and (2) understanding how to have money work for you (not the other way around).  So, people who practice these as children, and then take and use these great habits as adults, will have enough money to:

  1. Create a sound financial foundation to take care of their basic needs
  2. Enjoy a comfortable lifestyle of his/her own design
  3. Invest money so that it continues to add to their financial wealth
  4. Donate money to help others
  5. Have the freedom to use his/her own unique talents in a way most beneficial to society

As parents, we want an abundance of happiness, health, love, wisdom, and finances for our children.  But, the parental challenge has always been to be able to transform our desire into a reality.  In an immediate, on-the-job training way, we must find the resources to quickly educate ourselves on some (or all) of these areas, and then become expert at teaching these values to our children.

I was inspired to write this book when I realized that a huge number of adults in their mid-30s to mid-50s were just now becoming tuned-in to an abundance-mentality and how to use money wisely, thanks to some great teachers among us.  Essentially, 3 generations later, the poverty-consciousness of the Depression was giving way to a more constructive, more empowering reality.  I realized that despite the many books and workshops that all of these adults were reading and attending, and all of the new improved mind-sets and behavior that was occurring as a result of this re-education, there were still no resources for these adults to instill an abundance mentality and wise money management in their children, at a child’s level.  Thus, this book was created – from a current and positive improvement in our society – to address a real need – in order to help the next generation grow with more a solid foundation into happier, more productive lives.

At the end of this book is a RESOURCE section that gives you more direction and information about abundance-mentality and wise money management books, games, and other resources.

Of course, if you find this book a little organized and detailed, you can chalk it up to my book-worm, math-nerd, and attorney nature. Like most parents, my divorce clients want their children to experience abundance and to learn good life skills, despite the divorce transition that the family experiences. And, of course, these divorcing people need some abundance-mentality and wise money management training that I mentioned above. So, my professinal experiences confirm that this book is much needed.

CHAPTER 2

The Theory & The "How To"

There are 2 parts to this book:
Part I:            The Theory
Part II:           The “How To”
Obviously, most people think that the theory is worthless without the technique, so the tools and technique part of the book is really there to help assure your success with your child.

So, I have included a lot of examples of HOW TO do it in real life - because that's where things usually fall apart.  Remember math word problems in junior high school?  You could multiply and divide just fine.  And you knew the formula for rate was “rate times time equals distance.”  Great.  You believed you were adequately armed to face a math test.  Then the word problem appeared, "If a train was traveling west at a rate of 150 miles per hour . . .”  Fear and panic immediately descended upon you - how do I APPLY the formula and the mathematical operations to this word problem?

For parents, we have the additional challenge of having a lot more emotional pressure being wrapped up into raising our children than just the stress of an 8th grade math test (or even a college entrance exam).  Further, somehow all of the average pressures and details of our daily lives sap our patience and learning energies, so that the emotional pressure of wanting to do a great job with our kids, plus daily draining chores means we actually become much less effective than we were on our 8th grade math tests. [Bet you didn’t think that was possible!]

I did great on 8th grade math tests, and I connect very well with children, which is why I have fun with them – and they learn from me - without my “teaching” them.  It is also the reason that I am sharing my knowledge, skills, enthusiasm and experience with others who are seeking guidance on passing on abundance and money wisdom to their children.  It’s the “teaching a man how to fish” wisdom approach, rather than the quick-fix style of just giving him a fish.

Want More Resources to help you grow and overcome your dysfunctional money childhood? Here are some of the Best:

Want to know if your child can really do something with his/her money beyond just buying a new pair of sneakers? Find out how several teenagers created businesses and made millions. Good kids, great stories, wonderful value systems! "The Richest Kids in America," by Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of "Chicken Soup for the Soul."

Robert Kiyosaki's classic, "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," on CD so you can listen while you're driving! If you're not yet familiar with "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," it's a great book! Kiyosaki is a good story teller, and in telling his true childhood story, he teaches you about money, how it works, and how to get it to work for you. You'll learn and appreciate "Return on Investment" or "ROI."

Robert Kiyosaki's classic, "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," in the traditional book format (for traditional readers):

In "Automatic Millionaire," David Bach really brings home the concepts that small savings can build to huge wealth (if not hindered by useless debt), and how useless debt can suck you dry regardless of how much you try to save! Peace of Mind comes, in part, from living with your finances on "automatic." Make the big decisions, then set up the process on automatic so that you're not trying to make the same tough decisions over and over again.

"Transforming Debt into Wealth," by John Cummata has a ton of resources that will get you on the right track and out of debt, if you're still struggling with financial stress while you're teaching your kids the keys to financial wealth.
